Some of us are plagued by dry skin. It is a concern that many of my clients have. Understanding possible causes can better aid us finding solutions to alleviate some skin problems. Most cases of dry skin have an environmental cause. Here are some common causes of skin dryness:
Harsh soaps and detergents: Conventional soaps strip moisture from your skin. Antibacterial soaps are the worst, along with deodorants. Even shampoos can dry out your scalp.
Weather: In general, skin is driest when the humidity level is the lowest.
Heat: Living in desert regions, using space heaters and central heating can all dry out your skin due to reduced humidity.
Sun exposure: Frequent and prolonged exposure to the sun can cause dry skin and the ultraviolet radiation (UV) penetrates deep beyond the top layers of the skin.
Hot showers, baths, and pools: Indulging in long, hot showers can make your skin dry. So can swimming often in a heavily chlorinated pool.
Skin conditions: Certain conditions, like psoriasis and eczema, are accompanied by dry skin.
If you are experiencing dry and irritated skin that won't heal, broken or blistered skin see your health care practitioner immediately, this could be a sign of infection or more serious health issues.
What solutions do we have?
The solutions to most of these common dryness are simple.
Limit prolonged exposure to sun, hot showers and chemically saturated soaps and products.
Use a humidifier indoors to add moisture to the air, if you live in a dry region.
Drink plenty clean and pure water. Never drink faucet water. Drink natural fruit juices instead if water is not available.
Use organic oils to protect your skin while its healing. Some oils that can promote healthy skin are coconut oil, almond oil, shea butter, avocado oil and rosehip seed oil. You may add essential oils or plant extracts to these oils to enhance its healing properties.
One of my clients favorite is an equal parts mixture of coconout oil and olive oil in an 8 oz bottle add 10 drops of rosemary and 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Mix well for about a minute. Then use it as body oil after your shower, bath or after shave.
Make your own mixture with your favorite essential oil fragrance and protect your skin on a daily basis. You will have healthy looking skin.
